Sweets Capital of Texas
Wood County's communities have picked up recognition well beyond East Texas in recent years. In 2023, the Texas Legislature officially designated Mineola the Sweets Capital of Texas, a title good through 2033 that celebrates the city's cluster of locally owned candy, fudge, and pie shops in its historic downtown.
Ranked Nationally
Mineola also carries the National Main Street City designation and has been ranked among the most beautiful historic downtowns in the state — recognition built on a decades-long, resident-led effort to preserve its early-1900s storefronts rather than replace them.
Quality of Life
The county's quality of life has drawn its own accolades: WorldAtlas has named Mineola one of the best small towns to retire to in Texas, citing its restored downtown, surrounding nature preserve, and relatively low cost of living. Independent livability rankings have given Mineola, Quitman, and Winnsboro strong marks for the same reasons residents cite most — safety, affordability, and a genuine small-town feel. And for anglers, the county's own Lake Fork carries a recognition no one can take away: it's produced more of Texas's biggest bass, including the current state record, than any other lake in the state.
