Top Trophy Bass Lake in the USA

Outdoor recreation is the heartbeat of Wood County, and Lake Fork is its centerpiece. Widely regarded as the top trophy bass lake in the country, Lake Fork holds the Texas state record for largemouth bass — an 18.18-pound catch landed in 1992 — and has produced more of the state's biggest bass, and more Toyota ShareLunker entries, than any other lake in Texas, with over 100 ShareLunker-class fish logged in 2024 alone.

Largest City Park per Resident in the USA

Beyond fishing, visitors can tee off at The Links at Land's End, a top-tier golf course set on a peninsula at the center of the lake, or walk the trails of the Mineola Nature Preserve, the largest city park per resident of any in the country.

Wood County Communities

Each of the county's communities brings its own flavor to a visit. Mineola's historic downtown mixes antique shops, boutiques, and a working winery around the Select Theater, one of the oldest continuously operating movie theaters in America, with live entertainment at the Bowery Stage and the Lake Country Playhouse rounding out the evening. Quitman, the county seat, is home to the often-photographed Wood County Courthouse and Governor Jim Hogg City Park, while Winnsboro has built a reputation as a regional hub for live music and the arts. A daily Amtrak Texas Eagle stop in Mineola connects the county to cities from Chicago to Los Angeles — a rare small-town amenity that makes Wood County an easy add to any itinerary.
